Tour de Cure Origins

After finishing a ride back in October 2006, Geoff Coombes and Gary Bertwistle shared a coffee and chatted. As the chat went on, the topic turned to how they could combine their passion for cycling and contributing to a worthwhile charity.

What started as a coffee between two mates led to Tour de Cure’s registration as an Australian charity and the inaugural tour, in May 2007.

The Tour is now into its third year and has raised over a $1million.

Reasons for doing the ride

Joining the Tour for the first time this year, Byron will ride in honour of the close family members he has lost to cancer.

A caring and compassionate person with a strong passion for cycling, Byron lists Lance Armstrong as his true inspiration.

Through riding with Tour de Cure, Byron will combine his love of cycling with his desire to do his bit towards finding a cure for cancer.

He says, “When there is a breakthrough for the cure of this disease I would feel complete knowing I have done everything I could do to help contribute to the cure. Until this cure is found I can at least do my part to help support and provide hope to those with cancer.”

When he puts his mind to achieving a result, Byron has every intention of fulfilling it.

He is inspired to help find a cure for cancer and we stand behind his intention and determination.

Hearing everyone’s stories is such an inspiration!

2010 Tour

In May 2010 a team of 100 riders and support crew rode from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast a total of 1400 kilometres to raise much needed funds for the research, support and prevention of cancer.

In a historic cycling tour the Tour de Cure team raised over $1.63 million dollars which eclipsed every expectation and goal set by the Tour.
